To address the inherent challenges that many nursing homes are facing during the COVID-19 pandemic, Sheba Medical Center has offered specialized assistance to ten nursing homes in the metro Tel Aviv region.
Given their advanced age and in some cases underlying medical conditions, many residents of nursing homes are at high risk for complications from the virus, and improper health protocols in some institutions across the world have proven to have deadly consequences.
“Because long term care facilities, assisted living communities and nursing homes are prioritized for preventive public health interventions, Sheba composed a team of clinical, public health, infections control, nursing and engineering experts to instruct and support these communities in prevention of local COVID-19 outbreaks,” explained Prof. Eyal Leshem, Director of the Center for Travel Medicine and Tropical Diseases at Sheba Medical Center, Tel HaShomer, who is in charge of medical consulting and diagnostics for this project.
“The team discusses preparation for a possible outbreak, supports the logistics of building an isolated COVID-19 unit within the nursing home and establishes direct communication between Sheba experts and nursing home professional staff,” continued Leshem.
