All was still until 6:30 a.m. Sirens blared and terrorists entered Kfar Aza, forever disrupting Oct. 7, 2023. The voices grew closer, and within moments, the only thing separating Erez and his family from Hamas was their front door.
He had one thought: save his wife and daughter.
Erez threw himself in front of them while holding the door shut. He never let go, even as their home was pummeled by explosives and gunfire.
Because of Erez, they all survived. As he and his family awaited help, Erez faded in and out of consciousness, never sure if he was safe.
The next time he awoke was in a hospital bed at Sheba Medical Center, where he was being treated for severe injuries to his hands and legs. Within 10 months, he underwent 9 surgeries. Little by little, Erez relearned to use his body.
Today, Erez can use his hands and legs. Alongside the doctors and nurses that cared for him, he recently returned to Kfar Aza to run a 5K, recognizing all the pain he has been through and all the life he still has to live.
