Sheba is Sending a Field Hospital to Western Ukraine

March 6, 2022

For the first time in its 74-year history, Israel’s #1 medical center, Sheba Medical Center, is sending a field hospital to a war zone, in western Ukraine.

Sheba will operate the field hospital near the city of Lviv, Ukraine. The mission will leave on Thursday, March 11th and plans to remain on Ukrainian soil for at least one month.

Various medical teams from Sheba will operate the field hospital on 12-hour shifts, 24/7.

The ER will have the capacity to treat 150 patients. The hospital will be able to accommodate 33 beds with possibility to increase to 66 beds as needed.

In this photo, Israel’s Minister of Health Nitzan Horowitz visited Sheba today and was shown the innovative field hospital by Prof. Elhanan Bar-On, Director of the Israel Center for Humanitarian Emergency and Disaster Medicine.

Field Hospital Operations will include: Triage, ER, Outpatient Clinic, Pediatrics, Labor and Delivery, Isolation, Mental Health, Imaging, Laboratory, Pharmacy, and Logistics. And of course, Sheba will continue to utilize the program already treating refugees on the ground in Moldova, Sheba Beyond Telehealth, which allows physicians remaining in Tel Aviv to diagnose and treat patients remotely. Here is an i24 television report on that ongoing work.

Israel has explicitly ruled out the involvement of the IDF in this mission – Sheba is running it and utilizing other Israeli health resources. The mission will be led by Prof. Elhanan Bar-On, MD, Director of the Israel Center for Humanitarian Emergency and Disaster Medicine and Yoel Har-Even, Director of Sheba Global, both veterans of medical humanitarian missions.

Professor Yitshak Kreiss, Director-General of Sheba, said that “it is our personal and national responsibility to extend a helping hand to every human being. We have the knowledge and capability to carry out this mission.”

The Board of Directors of American Friends of Sheba Medical Center has put up a $25,000 challenge fund. They will match every dollar raised starting today, so every gift up is doubled up to a total of $25,000.

When Israel wants to send medical humanitarian relief, Israel calls on Sheba Medical Center, one of the Top Ten hospitals in the world four years running.
