Oksana Boikul is a Ukrainian toddler who suffered from a rare, life-threatening birth defect called craniosynostosis, a condition in which the bones in a baby’s skull join together too early or incorrectly.
This meant her skull was too malformed to accommodate her growing brain. As the baby’s brain grows, the skull can become more misshapen, and if the condition is not treated, the build-up of pressure in the baby’s skull can lead to problems such as blindness, seizures, or brain damage. However, there is no medical facility in war-torn Ukraine that could save her life.
Sheba arranged to transfer her to Israel where Oksana underwent a complicated surgery performed by a skilled team of Sheba surgeons and support personnel. After several days of recuperation, Oksana was released with a new lease on life.
