Premier international healthcare accreditor Joint Commission International (JCI) announced this week that Israel’s Sheba Medical Center had passed its exacting review standards with “flying colors.” Based on its findings, Sheba Medical Center will receive a “Gold Standard” international ranking certificate, placing it among the world’s most elite hospitals.
On the heels of being recognized as Newsweek’s “10 Best Hospitals in the World,” Sheba Medical Center, Tel HaShomer has now been awarded the “Gold Standard” by the Joint Commission International (JCI).
Premier international healthcare accreditor JCI only awards this Gold Standard accreditation to health care organizations that meet the highest international benchmarks when it comes to healthcare standards, training and processes.
During its exacting eight-day review process, JCI International surveyors fanned out across Sheba’s 200-acre campus, interviewing doctors, nurses, patients and other medical personnel in an effort to understand the daily DNA of the hospital’s operations. Building by building, they reviewed Sheba’s records, facilities and procedures against a demanding list of standards and criteria that touch on more than 1170 measurable elements.
JCI standards and evaluation methods stand alone in the world as unique tools designed to drive positive change. The JCI review touches every part of the hospital and provides a complete evaluation of the effectiveness of the hospital’s patient safety and quality system.
At the review’s closing ceremony, Diane M. Sanders, RN, MN, Nurse, and JCI’s chief surveyor, told a standing room only crowd:
“It has been an honor to survey Sheba Medical Center. I must say, this was one of the most rewarding weeks in my entire career. You are never satisfied with just passing. Your compassion for the patients was amazing to experience. You are the spirit of Israel and Sheba embodies the essence of this country. You are most worthy of being ranked by Newsweek magazine as being amongst the Top 10 Hospitals in the World.”
Accepting the certificate, Prof. Yitshak Kreiss, Director General of Sheba Medical Center, expressed his appreciation and Sheba’s commitment to the highest of standards.
“I am extremely proud of our staff. We not only want to raise the bar for our standards but pursue excellence in everything we do. JCI shares our values and aspirations to be better. Our patients told the surveyors about their patient experiences, including the staff’s compassion and professionalism. This is the essence of our excellence and the essence of what we call the ‘spirit of Sheba.'”
